Independence Day as a Moment of Reflection, Remembrance, and Unity

This 17th of February, on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of Kosovo’s Independence, we paused to reflect on our country’s journey toward freedom and to share this story with those who today call Kosovo their second home. For us, this date represents more than a national holiday; it is a moment to reflect on the journey of a people toward liberty, on the sacrifices made, and on the responsibility we carry to preserve and nurture it every day.

On the eve of this day, together with our refugee friends, we organized a visit to the Reporting House in Prishtina. Through documented testimonies, photographs, and authentic narratives, we gained a deeper understanding of the periods that have shaped the country’s history. The exhibition space provided a calm environment for reflection, where each visitor had the opportunity to pause, listen, and learn more about the challenges and resilience that have shaped today’s reality.

This visit became a meeting point for diverse life experiences. For many of our friends, the stories presented evoked emotions and personal memories, fostering a deep sense of empathy and understanding. Beyond differences in language, culture, or origin, it became clear that the experience of loss, displacement, and the search for safety is universal. Through this sharing of experiences, a connecting bridge was built, strengthening the sense of belonging and solidarity.

At the same time, the visit reminded us of the extraordinary human capacity to rebuild life, to find hope, and to move forward even when the journey seems difficult. The values of resilience, dignity, and belief in a better future are what unite us beyond borders. They are the foundation upon which a fairer and more inclusive society is built.

Today, as we celebrate freedom, we also remember how precious and necessary it is for every person. Freedom requires care, commitment, and ongoing solidarity. In this spirit, we continue to stand alongside those on the move, creating spaces where history, dialogue, and understanding become bridges that bring us closer to one another.
