My story by Lyudmila Makey

Last April, I arrived in Pristina. I drove through four countries and did not know what was waiting for me. I almost forgot the English language I learned at school and university, and I didn’t understand Albanian. I had no friends and acquaintances.

But today I speak English confidently and can even communicate a little in Albanian. My Ukrainian colleagues and I got this opportunity thanks to language courses. They were organized by specialists from JRS Kosovo. They ensure that Ukrainian refugees receive a voucher for the purchase of food products on time. They also organized integration courses for us, supported by MARDI project-Caritas Switzerland in Kosovo.  For several months, Professor Afrim Hoti of the University of Pristina taught us the history and social studies of Kosovo. We not only studied the theory, but also visited different cities of Kosovo: Prizren, Gjakova, Peja. We tried the national cuisine of the Albanians.

In addition, I regularly attend concerts and art events held in Pristina. These are ChopinFest, Manifesta, Opera Festival and others. I got acquainted with the theater and cinematography of Kosovo, made friends with artists and musicians.

Recently, my first personal exhibition of paintings “Flowers Against War” was held at the National History Museum. It was visited by numerous guests from different countries. I am very pleased to feel such interest in Ukraine and support from the people of Kosovo.

I was honored to be part of the delegation that accompanied President Vjosa Osmani to Strasbourg. I was present during her speech in the European Parliament along with other famous people from Kosovo. It is very important for me. I don’t feel lonely, I have many friends. And most importantly, I continue to engage in journalism and work for Ukrainian and European media. I thank the professional program “Journalists in Residence in Kosovo”. for the opportunity to live and work in Kosovo. I hope this will help Ukraine and Kosovo become closer to each other after our victory over the Russian aggressor.
